More than just a beautiful coastal city, Miami is the only major U.S. city to be founded by a woman. 1. The name Miami comes from one of the native tribes that lived in the region in the 1600s and 1700s, the Mayaimi.

2. Miami Beach is home to the world’s largest collection of art deco architecture.

6. Miami Beach is largely manmade. Because of this, its beaches have to be frequently replenished with new sand.

7. Miami is the only major U.S. city founded by a woman. Her name was Julia Tuttle, and she made Miami an official spot on the map when she encouraged a railroad mogul to expand in the area in 1896.

8. Miami Beach is home to one of the largest snow skiing clubs in the U.S.

9. It has snowed exactly one time in Miami, according to the city’s official meteorological history. That fateful day was January 19, 1977.
